Put the camera at eye level, light yourself from the front, add it to OBS as a Video Capture Device, frame and crop the source, balance audio, record a test, then publish the OBS scene. If you prefer not to show your raw camera, transform it in LiveGen first and capture the finished view into OBS.
A good webcam for live streaming is less about buying the highest-resolution sensor and more about controlling the chain around it. Light, framing, exposure, microphone quality, encoder settings, and privacy often make a larger visible difference than moving from one ordinary 1080p webcam to another.
For a normal stream, the path is:
Webcam → OBS scene → encoder → Twitch, YouTube, Kick, or another platform
For a live AI character or camera effect, add one stage:
Webcam → LiveGen transformation → OBS scene → encoder → streaming platform
The webcam supplies the performance in both cases. OBS controls composition and publishing. LiveGen is optional visual processing between them; it is not the streaming encoder.
Before buying anything, test the camera already in your laptop or phone under better light. If the picture improves dramatically, lighting is the next upgrade — not necessarily another camera.
Mount the webcam close to eye level and look toward it during important moments. Put the strongest light in front of you, slightly above eye level. A window can work during the day; a soft lamp or inexpensive key light is more consistent.
Avoid a bright window directly behind you. The webcam will expose for the window and turn the subject dark, which also makes live character tracking less stable. Keep the background deliberate and remove names, addresses, reflective screens, or personal items you do not want recorded.
In OBS, select the scene, click Add Source, choose Video Capture Device, and select the physical webcam. Set a resolution and frame rate the camera can sustain. Resize the source in the canvas; hold the crop modifier for your operating system while dragging if you need a tighter frame.
If another application already owns the camera, OBS may receive a black picture. Close the other app or use a deliberate routing method rather than letting several programs compete for one device.
Start with automatic settings, then lock anything that visibly changes during normal movement. The goal is not cinematic color; it is a picture that remains readable throughout the session.
There are three common choices:
For the third option, open LiveGen Studio, choose Live Morph or another mode, and capture the resulting browser window in OBS. Do not leave the raw Video Capture Device visible underneath unless that reveal is intentional.
If the destination is a video call or cam-to-cam website rather than a streaming platform, publish the OBS scene through OBS Virtual Camera and select that device in the other application.
The webcam microphone is convenient but often sounds distant. A microphone placed closer to the speaker usually improves the stream more than another camera upgrade. Watch the OBS mixer so normal speech peaks safely below clipping.
Real-time visual processing can add a consistent delay. Record yourself clapping once, then check whether the visible clap and audio transient align. If they do not, add a measured sync offset to the faster source. Do not guess while live.
Run a five-minute recording with the same applications, resolution, lighting, and scene changes planned for the broadcast. Include normal speech, fast movement, a quiet moment, and the loudest game or media audio.

1080p is a useful ceiling for most creator setups, but 720p can look excellent in a smaller camera box. Stable exposure and lighting matter more than the label.
