What is a Virtual Camera?

A virtual camera is software that registers itself with your operating system as a webcam, so any app that asks for a camera — Zoom, Discord, OBS, a browser — receives video produced by software rather than a physical lens.

Every video app on your computer gets its picture the same way: it asks the operating system for a list of camera devices and reads frames from whichever one you pick. Nothing in that handshake requires a physical lens. A virtual camera exploits this by adding a software-defined device to the list; whatever frames the software writes there are what the app receives. The receiving app can't tell the difference, which is the entire point.

That one trick built an ecosystem. Desktop effects suites, VTuber tools, and broadcast software all deliver their output as a virtual camera because it makes them instantly compatible with every camera-consuming app ever written. In both senses, the defining property is indirection: the consuming app receives software-produced frames through the same interface it would use for a sensor. How it works

Under the hood, a virtual camera is a driver-level arrangement with three moving parts:

A driver registers a system-level camera device. On Windows this is typically a DirectShow or Media Foundation video source; on modern macOS it is a Core Media I/O camera extension. Once registered, the OS lists it as real hardware.

A producer application writes frames into the device. The app doing the filtering, compositing, or generating renders each finished frame into the virtual device's buffer.

Any consumer app reads it like a webcam. Because registration happens at the OS level, the virtual camera shows up in every application's camera list — native meeting clients, streaming tools, even the browser's camera-permission picker.

The routing layer itself is thin; the meaningful work — and any delay you can perceive — happens in the producer before frames reach the device. The processing engine upstream, not the plumbing, is what you are really evaluating.
