An interface world model is an AI model that draws a working app or website as video, frame by frame, while you use it, instead of running code. You click or type, a language model decides what should happen, and a real-time video model renders the next screen. Runway introduced the term on August 31, 2026, with Solaris, the first model of the kind.
The idea joins two things that used to be separate. An ordinary interface is a deterministic program: the same click always does the same thing. A world model is a generator of visual content that keeps simulating a scene as you act in it. Runway's framing is that an interface world model has to be both: predictable enough to use, and generated live like a world.
The result has no implementation layer: the image is the application. Runway lists three properties it is aiming for: entirely visual, alive (the scene keeps evolving between your actions) and open-ended (the same screen can support behaviors nobody coded in advance).
In a study with 250 participants, 30 interaction examples and nearly 7,500 pairwise judgments, people compared Solaris with a coded website that Claude Opus 5 built from the same image and requests:
| Question | Solaris preferred | Coded site preferred | Rated equal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Followed the instruction better | 61% | 24% | 13% |
| Behaved more naturally | 71% | 21% | 6% |
Figures are from Runway's Solaris announcement. Runway ran the study on its own model and does not publish per-example scores.
Solaris is not a public product. As of October 2026 Runway is working with partners and taking requests through an early-access form.

Solaris is Runway's interface world model, announced on August 31, 2026. It generates application interfaces frame by frame as you interact with them, using a language model to decide behavior and a real-time version of Gen-4.5 to render each frame.
Not publicly yet. Runway offers early access through a request form and says it is working with partners on a public launch.
Not today. Runway's own list of open problems (legible text, long-session coherence, accessibility) means it works as a research direction and prototyping tool, not a replacement for coded software.
Runway, in its Solaris announcement on August 31, 2026, which describes Solaris as the first model in a new family it calls Interface World Models.
